> Image Specifications
All images on this site are offered on a Royalty Free basis which means that users do not need to refer to Round the World images as to how images will be used. But it is the responsibility of the user to obtain any clearances prior to use. Round the World images offers no warranties regarding specific use of images. Certain images have been designated for editorial use only and must only be used for this editorial purposes.
Image sizes
A4 Size? All images on the site are sized to accommodate an A4 format with a working uncompressed file size of 25MB. In all cases the images can be scaled to fit within an A4 format. Square format images (6x6) can be scaled either up or down to an A4 pro.
Adobe RGB (1998) colour space
Digital images are used in many different ways, of which printing is only one. Our policy is to leave our files in RGB format, a decision based on the following facts: • Converting RGB images to CMYK results in irrecoverable loss of luminosity. • RGB is suitable for use in multimedia and Internet applications as it corresponds to the screen format. • This format allows professionals to create their own CMYK separated files according to the paper used for printing.
Image download
Our 25 Mb High Resolution Tiffs Files (minimum size depending on the image) are compressed into a JPEG format. The Download manager area is only accessible once your order has been processed. You will find a link to the Download Manager area by clicking on the tab My Account.
• Download size: compressed JPEG - 1 to 5 MB (from 25MB original file)• Suggested use: to match your exact requirements, our system will resize the images instantly to provide you with the exact image print -or electronic- size requested for your project. Several print sizes are available for immediate downlaod, up to A4 page. A3 size is only available for download through our FTP server
> Searching
We have endeavored to create an easy to search database for our growing collection of images. As you can see there are numerous categories to browse. You can also enter keywords in the search box to narrow your choices. We have embedded keywords into all the image collections to respond to more selected searches. The scope of your search results will be determined by your selection of keywords.
The system supports the "AND" and NOT" operands in the quick search function by the use of the plus sign (+) and minus sign (-) respectively in front of the keywords.
If you input "beautiful +sunset" (without the quotes) into the search field, the system will only return results for any media that contain both keywords "beautiful" AND "sunset" in its properties.
If you input "beautiful "sunset" (without the quotes) into the search field, the system will return results for any media that contain the keyword "beautiful", but this media can't contain the keyword "sunset" in its properties.
Note: There must not any spaces between the second keyword and the input operands (+), (-) keywords.

What is a Model Release?
A Model Release is a document signed by the person apearing in a photograph who agrees to release his image for commercial use. It is important that our Clients knows how, where and when a Model release needs to be used. Law of privacy exist in almost every country, but not in the UK, so care should be taken when using members of the public in any image used for advertising or commercial purposes and have clearance by the model within the image.
There is a difference between an editorial use of a picture and a commercial use of a picture.
For instance, if a newspaper or a book publisher uses a picture of a new york taxi driver to illustrate an article on, say, the cost of living in downtown NYC, that is an "editorial" usage of the picture. The photograph is being used to illustrate the editorial content of the article. Therefore the newspaper doesn’t need permission from the "model" to use this photograph.
If, in that same newspaper, the same photo is used in an advertisement for a car company, that is a commercial use of that picture. Therefore the company advertising its products must have the person's permission to do so in the form of a valid Model release.
There is a common confusion that needs to be cleared: the type of licenses under which you purchase an image is irrelevant. Buying a "royalty-free" picture doesn’t relieve the Client of any liability for Model release issues.

When are Model Releases required?
Generally anytime there are recognizable people in an image that is being used for any commercial purposes in order to promote a product or a service. The size and position of the image on a brochure or packaging or any business collateral is irrelevant. The photographer must have obtained a signed model release from the person appearing in the image.
If the image is being used for purely editorial or educational use a model release may not be required. If you are in doubt ask a legal professional about your specific use. Be sure if the image is not released that your usage is legal or it may cost you far more than the licensing fee.

What is a Property Release?
In the US it is becoming common for corporate building owners to insist that photographers obtain a Property release before using photographs of their buildings. This is a grey area but, so far, most US Courts have rejected such claims. In the UK, there was recently reports of the Church of England discussing trademarking its cathedrals, and the Millenium Experience Company trying to trademark the London skyline that would include the Dome. The Section 62 of The Copyright, Designs and Patent Act 1998 provides that the copyright in a building is not infringed by making a photograph of it, or film of it, irrespective of its location. UK law offers very little protection to building owners and photographers are not yet prevented from reproducing and distributing their creative interpretation of a building.
However, generally anytime there is a recognizable private property, or a trademark or a logo or a brand appearing in an image, a property release may be necessary for commercial use of an image, e.g: to promote a service or a product. If an image is being used for editorial or educational, a property release may not be required.

Sensitive Subjects
Before licensing images from our website, clients must be aware of legal rights to consider when using images for sensitive subjects. It is not the intention of Round The World Images to provide legal advice but simply raise client awareness of issues that are important to our clients, photographers and models. It is the client’s responsibility to contact Round The World Images and notify us about all the details of the usage, to request sensitive subject permission and to finalize the license accordingly. Sensitive subject is an issue to be considered for both editorial and commercial usages. Subject as Alcohol, Suicide, Depression, Drug, Homosexuality, Negative Financial Portrayal, Tobacco, Sexual Harassment etc. are considered as sensitive subject. Please note this list is by no mean final or complete. Common sense is required to evaluate the potential defamation when using an image to illustrate a sensitive subject.
Model Release and Sensitive Subjects. ?An image may be model released, but still not available for a sensitive subject usage. For example, a model may consent to being used in an advert for an airline company, but may not grant permission to be used in a supermarket promotion. Same applies to humorous usage of an image which may offend different group of people. If the image requested for sensitive subject usage contains a person, there must be a model release on file in order for us to clear sensitive subject usage. We cannot clear sensitive subject for images that are not model released. Additionally, model released photos require further clearances from the photographer and/or model to avoid potential defamation (i.e., disparagement of the good name and reputation of an individual). In some cases, a model may ask for an additional fee for sensitive subject usage, which will be passed along to the client.

Licensing explained
What is a Right Managed licence?
All our images are copyrighted to our photographers and contributors and therefore must be licensed before use. A Right Managed (RM) licence allows you to use an image in a certain way, once an appropriate fee has been agreed. The licence to use an image will appear on your invoice and will describe exactly how the image can be used.

How is a licence fee calculated?
You can price images using the Price Calculator. You can then select drop down menus to give all the necessary information regarding the usage of an image, i.e.: size (e.g. 1/2 page), distribution (e.g. English languages worldwide), print run (e.g. 500,000), position of the image (e.g. Front Cover) etc. It takes only a few seconds to define the parameters needed to calculate the fee for your license.
Right Managed licence fees can vary according to the way images are used. They do not vary from image to image. The fee you have been quoted for a particular use will remain the same, whichever image you choose, as long as the usage is the same.

Can I use the image again and again once I pay a licence fee?
No. The licence will cover you for an agreed one-time usage. If you want to use the same image in a different medium at a later stage, then there will be an additional fee. If you want to use an image for a variety of uses at the same time (i.e.: a marketing campaign and a calendar) then an all-in fee can be negotiated with us. ?Before using Round The World Images, you should always read our terms and conditions. This explains the way we do things and any restrictions you might encounter for the use of our images.

Who will ever find out if I use images in a different way?
Photographers and agencies take image piracy and infringement of copyright very seriously. We make our living selling the rights to use our images. If people use our images without paying for them, we go out of business. Stealing images is not only unfair to us but to our customers. We have an obligation to protect our customers who are professional creatives themselves. If they are competing against someone who is stealing images, it puts them at a disadvantage.
Most image libraries are now using affordable software to encrypt non-watermarked images, which allows them to track down their images over the web. Digital fingerprints stays with the image even if "infringers" only use part of it. Regards to watermarks, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 makes it a criminal offence to remove watermarks meant to protect copyright.
"Infringement of lawful copyright" holds severe penalties up to £100,000 per infringement in the USA. Courts have made it clear that penalties are not based on the fee that should have been paid for the usage of the image, but on the very act of violation of somebody's copyright. In Europe, especially France, penalties can also be extremely heavy. The UK is getting towards the US approach where penalties are sufficiently draconian so as to ensure is not worth the risk.
